Long-time producer of The Legend of Zelda series, Eiji Aonuma, recently sat down in an interview to discuss the latest entry in the franchise, The Legend of Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom. While the producer discussed various exciting points in the interview, he also showed interest in a potential movie or Tv adaptation.
Why It Matters: Recent live-action or animated adaptations of video games have proven to be quite successful, grossing huge profits. An adaptation of Zelda in some form would also follow in the same footsteps and prove successful.
In the interview, Eiji Aonuma was asked if the success of the latest Mario Bros. movie had him excited about the adaptation of a Zelda movie, to which he replied:
“I am interested. But it’s not just me being interested in something that makes things happen, unfortunately.”
The director of Tears of Kingdom, Hidemaro Fujibayashi, further added that fan demand is incredibly important to getting an eventual adaptation.
Video games are not always known for their success in the film industry. However, recent releases like the Super Mario Bros. movie, which has now grossed over $1 billion, and The Last of Us TV show, which has averaged 32 million viewers per episode, have paved the way for future adaptations of other gaming IPs.
Nintendo has previously shown interest in exploring more cinematic releases of their games. With the recent reception of Super Mario Bros. in theatres, Nintendo could bring other IPs like Zelda, Metroid, and more to the big screen.
The Legend of Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom is already a massive success, earning the highest rating on Opencritic. Therefore, a movie or Tv adaptation is likely to enjoy similar success.
