Story Highlights
  • Xbox has worked on its first-party games quite a bit over the last few years.
  • Following acquisitions and the establishment of new teams, Xbox’s roadmap is reportedly set in stone for the next 15 years.
  • Compared to typical roadmaps, this is much longer, hinting at an incredible number of first-party games from the console manufacturer in the future.

Xbox struggled with first-party titles for the longest time, but 2023 has been a memorable year. With several first-party titles this year, including Hi-Fi Rush, Starfield, and Forza Motorsport, Microsoft finally lived up to the promise of more games from first-party teams.

The company intends to continue this moment throughout the generation. However, a recent report claims that Xbox might be set for the next two generations, with a roadmap planned for 15 years.

Why it matters: Xbox aims to release four first-party titles each year. The company achieved this goal in 2023, and Phil Spencer states that Microsoft’s studios are now capable of making four releases each year, a very realistic possibility.

During the latest episode of the XboxEra podcast, reliable insider Nick Baker claimed that Xbox’s future seems bright due to various first-party games. Discussing the company’s future roadmap, he stated:

“Microsoft’s roadmap is out to like 10-15 years now because of how much they’ve got.”

Nick reported that the roadmap is far more expansive than it was once. Typically, publishers don’t plan much longer than 5 to 10 years, but Xbox seems to be one step ahead of everyone in the industry for now.

This is mainly because of the recent acquisition of Activision. Even before Activision Blizzard, Microsoft’s buyout of publishers like Bethesda and developers like Ninja Theory expanded the company’s first-party studios.

Following such deals, countless first-party games are in development for Xbox, a few of which were showcased during this year’s showcase. Titles like OD from Hideo Kojima, Indiana Jones, Marvel’s Blade, and The Elder Scrolls 6 are among the few games coming in the next few years.

Xbox is yet to reveal what teams like id Software and Tango Gameworks are working on next.

The company has also increased its collaboration with third-party teams in recent years. Major games like Stalker 2 and ARK 2 will be console exclusives, further expanding this lineup.

In 2024 alone, Xbox will ship at least two AAA games from first-party developers.

Hellblade 2 and Avowed are both shaping up to be big releases of their respective genres in 2024, but going by the shadow drop of Hi-fi Rush in 2023, more surprises could be planned for 2024.
