- Microsoft is expected to discuss its multiplatform strategy at the upcoming Xbox event.
- It seems the Activision Blizzard merger is to be blamed for this third-party push.
- The next Doom game is reportedly launching on PS5 from day one.
With the Xbox Games Showcase just around the corner, rumors about what to expect at the event have been circulating all over the internet. An industry insider has even stated that Microsoft will give an update on its multiplatform strategy sometime during or after the event.
Why it matters: After claiming to have lost the console wars, Microsoft has been pushing aggressively as a publisher. Various reports point to many more prominent franchises joining other platforms, too.
According to Windows Central, Microsoft will provide an update on where its ‘Pillar’ franchises, such as Halo, Forza, and Gears, fit in the company’s multiplatform approach.
The insider states that this new strategy is dubbed Project Latitude at Xbox. Jez Corden suggests Microsoft’s current third-party push is a direct result of its $72 billion acquisition of Activision Blizzard.
In an effort to recoup costs and turn a profit as quickly as possible, even iconic IPs like Halo are not completely ruled out from a third-party launch. Meanwhile, certain brand-new titles are expected to launch on PlayStation from day one, as well.
Among these is the new Doom game, which reportedly has a medieval setting and will be announced for all major platforms. While the insider did not provide an official date for the update, he stated it would come sometime around the Xbox Games Showcase.
Microsoft could, therefore, hold a smaller business update as it did in February to clear the air.
Microsoft marked a massive shift in plans as it opted to release four major exclusives on PlayStation. Last year’s showcase was strictly focused on exclusives. However, things are taking a turn this year with exclusivity becoming redundant from Microsoft.
The Xbox owners also previously showed intent of becoming a good publisher. With various games already released on multiple platforms, going multiplatform seems to be inevitable for Microsoft.
