Story Highlight
  • Xbox offers cloud gaming with Game Pass Ultimate.
  • The library of streamable games is currently limited to a select few games from the service.
  • Phil Spencer has now confirmed cloud gaming for owned games.

Cloud gaming is expected to change how we interact with and play our gaming libraries. Both PlayStation and Xbox are heavily invested in this technology, with the former believing it will be a significant part of the industry as early as 2025.

Similarly, Ubisoft is a believer in cloud gaming’s ability to transform the industry within ten years. Xbox appears to be ready to take a major step toward this transformation, hinting at Xbox Cloud Gaming support for owned games.

Why it matters: Cloud Gaming is still in the early stages, so each step is a big deal. With enough progress, this segment of the industry could go mainstream.

Xbox user NASburg recently asked Phil Spencer about the status of cloud gaming. The user wanted to know about being able to play games in his library through the cloud, and the Head of Microsoft Gaming was quick to reply, pointing to a 2024 release for this service.

Should be this year

This library is currently limited to Game Pass and a select few titles. Microsoft promised to expand it to the user’s library in 2019, but it seems the gaming giant is finally ready to implement it this year.

While Game Pass already offers an extensive list of games, this will open up a slew of new possibilities for Xbox Cloud Gaming. Certain users might not have tried this technology yet due to reservations about the games on offer.

However, Microsoft can now cater to each individual’s library.

Call of Duty Is Expected On Xbox Game Pass This Year

In 2022, Microsoft confirmed Xbox Cloud Gaming had reached 10 million subscribers. Game Pass also reached a total of 34 million subscribers this year, encouraging Microsoft further to invest in streaming and cloud technology.

Since Microsoft views the streaming market as a part of the traditional games market, it is motivated to improve the user experience.

Such services are well-suited to certain kinds of games, including those with turn-based combat systems and slower gameplay. Therefore, following this update, each individual can test Xbox Cloud Gaming with the titles best suited to streaming in their existing libraries.
