- Warner Bros confirms Wonder Woman will not be a live-service title.
- Monolith Productions is focused on a single-player release with the Nemesis system.
- However, other Warner Bros games will continue to incorporate live-service elements.
Wonder Woman is Monolith Productions’ first game since 2017’s Shadow of War. Borrowing the Nemesis system, this title has a lot of potential as one of the first games based on the female DC superhero.
Two years after its announcement, this game has not been seen much apart from a recent piece of concept art from a developer. However, a recent job listing pointed to live service elements for the game.
This rumor was enough to cause outrage in the industry, but Warner Bros has come forward to clarify that Wonder Woman is not a live-service game.
Why it matters: Following the company’s comments about a greater focus on live-service games that encourage continued engagement, many were concerned that Monolith Productions’ title would fall victim to this approach.
Speaking to IGN, a spokesperson said:
“Wonder Woman is not being designed as a live-service title.”
Warner Bros emphasized that Monolith Productions is focused on single-player elements in an open world. The game will allow players to take the role of Diana of Themyscira in an original story.
Still, Warner Bros’ statement does not provide clarification about potential microtransactions in the game. For the unfamiliar, Monolith Productions’ last title was infamous for its poorly designed microtransactions.
While the gameplay of Shadow of War was always considered great, the game was packed with microtransactions that influenced the gameplay. Following much backlash, these elements were toned down.
Hopefully, Wonder Woman will not launch with such elements.
Still, fans can expect Warner Bros’ live-service focus to bleed into other titles. Games like Mortal Kombat 1 and Suicide Squad: Kill the Justice League are current examples of this approach, with the latter having been in the works for 7 years.
More information about Wonder Woman is expected next year. The game has been in development for at least two years, so Monolith Productions may finally be ready to showcase its game to the world in the coming months.
