Story Highlights
  • Windows 10 works better on low-end PCs and requires lower component specifications to produce an optimum gaming experience, while Windows 11 needs higher specifications for a similar experience.
  • In comparing the average FPS on both Windows, the difference was ,small, and Windows 11 underperformed in some games.
  • Upgrade to Windows 11 if you have a high-spec PC or are willing to invest in one. If not, sticking to Windows 10 for gaming is not a bad deal either.

It’s been a while since Windows 11 came out, and users hurriedly switched to the latest version. But for those of you who are still loyal to Windows 10, let me tell you about a few of its perks. I still think Windows 10 is better for gaming. Let’s discuss why.

Testing Games On Both Versions

Let’s set the base first. I tested a few games on both Windows to spot statistical differences between them. The results will help you decide whether upgrading to Windows 10 is a smart move or not.

I used the same PC and 1080p graphics to test games on both versions for a valid comparison. First, I checked for the FPS rate difference while playing Red Dead Redemption 2. Here are the results.

The graph shows only a 1 FPS difference in average FPS between Windows 10 and Windows 11, with the prior leading the charge.

Nonetheless, I gave it another chance. I played GTA V this time, but the results were not convincing either. I only noted a difference of 3 FPS; honestly, I expected better from Windows 11.

Hence, I would consider it negligible because Microsoft claims Windows 11 is the “best Windows for gaming.”

Should You Upgrade To Windows 11 For Gaming?

Windows 11 offers dedicated features to improve your gaming experience. Gaming Mode, Auto HDR, Xbox Game Bar 2.0, and High-Performance Mode are added for more focused gaming. However, they do not contribute much to enhancing the gaming experience.

Windows 10 has lower system requirements, it needs 4GB RAM and 20GB hard disk space for operation. However, Windows 11 requires 8GB RAM and 64GB of disk space. Most older devices fail to meet the criteria, leaving users no choice but to delay the upgrade.

Plus, as the above comparisons show, Windows 11 is only slightly better in terms of FPS, and in some games, it is even lower than Windows 10. Additionally, the Auto HDR mode is only helpful if you have an HD gaming monitor. Otherwise, it doesn’t make much difference.

In addition, Microsoft’s DirectStorage API, which claims to reduce game loading times and enhance performance, is also available in Windows 10.

What Do Users Prefer?

According to Valve’s Steam Hardware and Software Survey conducted in April 2024, 51.03% of Windows users hold onto their Windows 10 for gaming. Users on Eleven Forums complained that Windows 11 offers nothing substantial than some new features.

Similarly, users on X are still in favor of Windows 10 as the better OS for gaming among the two. Some also experienced a buggy Windows 11, causing them to question the upgrade.

Another Tweet asked people which OS they preferred and if they would switch back to Windows 10. The results showed that 53.6% of voters picked Windows 10 over its successor.

Although Windows 11 could be your best pick for high-end PCs, if you have a low-end PC, I recommend you stick with Windows 10 for gaming. You won’t notice many improvements using Windows 11 on a low-end PC.
