- Ubisoft claims it was not too happy with Assassin’s Creed Nexus VR’s performance.
- The publisher is not investing in VR gaming for now.
- However, it acknowledges the impressive technology presented in recent products like Apple Vision Pro.
Ubisoft debuted its first VR outing for Assassin’s Creed last year. Bringing back characters like Ezio, this game was pitched as an incredibly immersive simulation for the publisher’s most popular IP.
However, recent financial earnings from Ubisoft point to a disappointing performance on the market. According to CEO Yves Guillemot, the French gaming giant is no longer too interested in exploring VR gaming for the time being.
Why it matters: VR gaming is expected to be a major part of gaming in the future, but its current perception shows that the industry is not ready to accept this form of gaming yet.
During a recent Q&A session, the CEO was asked about recent developments in the VR industry, including the Vision Pro, Apple’s most important product this year.
He was quick to acknowledge the impressive technology packed into such products but stated that Assassin’s Creed Nexus VR had not met the publisher’s expectations last year.
Yves Guillemot said:
“We though it would sell more, so we are not increasing our investment on VR at the moment.”
However, the CEO’s statement implied that Ubisoft would be ready to invest further in the segment when opportunities presented themselves.
Currently, VR gaming is a niche market. Apart from PlayStation, major gaming giants have strayed away from this industry, so it seems Ubisoft is going to follow suit and wait for further market growth.
Previously, the studio was working on a VR game for Splinter Cell. However, this game was canceled alongside several other shelved projects.
Meanwhile, Ubisoft also revealed that Assassin’s Creed Red is scheduled for the fiscal year ending March 2025, with past rumors pointing to a first look very soon.
Thanks to the likes of Star Wars Outlaws and the upcoming slate of Assassin’s Creed titles, the publisher appears quite confident about its future releases.
