Story Highlight
  • Ubisoft went back to its roots with Assassin’s Creed Mirage.
  • Fans enjoyed the concept since the older games are still quite beloved.
  • In a recent QnA, the developer has hinted that this trend will continue with future entries.

Ubisoft recently tried to go back to its roots with the latest Assassin’s Creed title, but it wasn’t the biggest success. The game didn’t exactly fail but received criticism from fans as well as the critics.

Many fans liked the concept, but the implementation was not perfect. This led many to believe that Ubisoft might not continue the old-school trend anymore. However, the developer has confirmed in a cryptic manner that the old-school trend will not die

Why it matters: Assassin’s Creed Mirage, while it had many faults, was a nice change of pace from the RPG format that became this IP’s standard approach after 2017.

Stephane Boudon and Jean-Luc Sala, two developers of Assassin’s Creed Mirage, hosted a QnA session on Reddit recently. The developers were asked if the team at Ubisoft Bordeaux would be interested in developing additional old-school AC games.

The developer did not say yes outright, but his reply was clearly teasing the future.

We work in the dark to serve the light(winking emoji).

Stephane Boudon used a direct quote from Assassin’s Creed, implying that Ubisoft Bordeaux was not done with this style of game. This was enough of a hint for the user who originally asked the question.

The user was quick to acknowledge the tease and stated that this was the best answer possible. Since Assassin’s Creed is headed into uncharted territory soon, the series seems to be offering a lot of diversity.

Assassin’s Creed Hexe sounds like a major departure from anything Ubisoft has done before, while 2024’s Assassin’s Creed Red will be another RPG release. What better to add to this variety than to create additional classic games?

Assassin’s Creed Mirage Showed The Appeal of The Old-School Design

This seems to be Ubisoft’s answer to ensure the IP stays fresh for fans. We found Assassin’s Creed Mirage lacking in many areas, but this was not a flaw of the traditional formula.

If anything, there was room for more improvement, so the formula deserves a few more chances.

Currently, fans are quite excited about Assassin’s Creed Hexe and Red. The former is targeting a 2026 launch window and will feature superpowers, while the latter will be released this year, and a gameplay reveal is expected soon.
