- The Witcher 4 development is picking up the pace, ready to enter production this year.
- CDPR is looking to use artificial intelligence for game development.
- A separate team has been created to explore such possibilities, so The Witcher 4 might rely on AI for some tasks.
- Artificial intelligence to replace human CDPR’s human workers.
With The Witcher 3 selling 50 million units and redefining expectations from open-world RPGs, the studio has set a high bar for itself with The Witcher 4. This project has been in pre-production for a while, but CDPR has recently provided a small update.
According to an interview, the team is gearing up to enter full production this year. However, the same interview confirms intentions to explore artificial intelligence for development.
Why it matters: AI holds the potential to ease AAA game development, possibly reducing the time needed to produce these big-budget games. 30% of developers from a recent survey also claim to be using artificial intelligence already.
This update on The Witcher 4 came from joint CEO Adam Badowski, who told Reuters that CDPR will not replace its core members with artificial intelligence.
However, a separate team tasked with exploring AI further has been created at the studio. Therefore, CDPR intends to use AI in conjunction with its current efforts, working alongside its benefits for smoother development. Adam Badowski added:
“We think AI is something that can help improve certain processes in game production.”
While he did not confirm whether The Witcher 4 would implement artificial intelligence, we believe it is quite likely.
If the game starts production this year, it should arrive around 2027 or 2028. By then, CDPR’s research and AI innovations should equip the team to begin implementing the technology, making The Witcher 4 perfect for initial experiments.
If successful, these efforts would be further iterated upon in the Cyberpunk 2077 sequel.
AI can easily handle mundane parts of game development. In addition to creating assets for games, this technology can help breathe more life into NPCs and random interactions.
In turn, this can bring development costs down, but CDPR is more interested in retaining the essence of its games. Therefore, most of the work will still be done by its developers in The Witcher 4.
The Witcher 4 is already being hyped up as CDPR’s most ambitious RPG. The stage has been set for the team to make another lasting impression.
Combining new technologies like Unreal Engine 5, experience gained from Cyberpunk 2077, and more capable hardware, this release is shaping up to be another success like its predecessor.
