- Bethesda is dropping a new update for Starfield that adds new display modes to the title.
- This seems to be a 40FPS mode since the Xbox Series S|X consoles are not capable of targeting 60FPS in the RPG.
- The update will also include city maps, ship-building, and other improvements.
Amidst all the hype around Fallout, Bethesda is still believing in Starfield. The latter didn’t sit well with the audience due to multiple reasons, but that might change with the new update coming soon.
Starfield has lost many of its players, but Bethesda’s latest update sounds promising. This update will also be significant for console gamers since it promises new ‘display modes’ to Starfield.
Why it matters: One of the biggest dealbreakers with Starfield was the lack of a proper performance mode on the consoles. It was locked at 30FPS, which is nowhere near ideal for this generation of consoles.
In a recent interview with Kinda Funny Games, Bethesda boss Todd Howard revealed future plans for the IP. He announced that the game’s paid expansion, Shattered Space, will arrive in the fall.
A smaller update that introduces new elements is also coming soon.
We’re adding Other display modes on consoles people have asked for.
– Todd Howard
The update adds city maps, ship-building, and other fixes.
However, the most significant of all changes is the fact that new display modes are coming to Starfield. This could mean a higher FPS mode is finally coming a year after the launch.
Todd Howard hasn’t confirmed what the modes will be, but if we were to take a guess, it would have to be a 40FPS mode since he did not say ‘Performance Mode.’ Perhaps Bethesda will offer a 40FPS mode with VRR, enabling a much smoother experience.
A similar mode is already in Fallout 4, so it seems believable.
The news is certainly exciting and will lure many gamers who wanted to give the Bethesda title a go but stayed away due to the 30FPS limit on consoles. The update will also be perfect for those jumping in once the expansion drops this fall.
However, while this is a much-welcome step, Bethesda may have been too late. The updates have finally come, but they are arriving at a time when the attention has been shifted to Fallout.
