Bethesda Game Studios has finally revealed nearly an hour of information about Starfield. The developer’s first new IP in 25 years is shaping up to be an exciting project, with the potential for hundreds of hours of exploration, combat, and side content.

In addition to the new information, the developer has updated the game’s Steam page, revealing the system requirements for Starfield. SSD storage is mandatory for the title, and PC users must free up 125GB of space.

Why it matters: Modern AAA games have been expanding in size, and many recent games have also recommended SSDs. However, Starfield states it is mandatory, suggesting that HDD users are out of luck.

Starfield features nearly 1000 planets. These planets are massive in size and come with their unique creatures and locations.

The game allows players to explore to their heart’s content, and each planet is full of small details. Therefore, it should not be surprising that Starfield will take up over 100GB of storage.

Upcoming games like Mortal Kombat 1 also require over 100GB of storage. Similarly, the recently revealed Final Fantasy 7 Rebirth will require two PS5 discs, each of which can hold up to 100GB of data.

However, compared to these games, Starfield’s scope is nearly limitless. Players can explore, form relationships with characters, invest in skills, acquire materials, and do much more.

The excessive storage requirement also means that Starfield may take up over 15% of available storage on the Xbox Series X and over 34% on the Xbox Series S if the game requires a similar amount of space on consoles.

Interestingly, Starfield’s system requirements claim that SSDs are required for the title. Previously, games like Cyberpunk 2077 have recommended an SSD for optimal experience, but Starfield may be among the few games that require faster storage.

This may suggest that Starfield will be unplayable on slower hard drives, but fans will have to wait for more testing to reach an accurate conclusion on this matter.

Starfield will be released on September 6, and audiences interested in learning more about the game can watch the recently released Starfield Direct.
