  • Star Wars Outlaws is breaking away from Ubisoft’s traditional open-world maps.
  • The game won’t feature the typical towers that reveal more of the map.
  • Instead, the publisher is aiming to deliver more natural exploration.

Star Wars Outlaws seeks to redeem Ubisoft after its latest release. Following the disappointment of Skull and Bones, Massive Entertainment’s upcoming title is said to be the most detailed Star Wars game.

The publisher has shared more good news about the release, confirming that it won’t feature Ubisoft’s signature tower climbing for those looking to explore the full map.

Why it matters: Ubisoft’s open-world formula has not evolved much in recent years, with the towers becoming a signature point of contention. Therefore, the team’s decision to step away from them is a big deal.

Brian Shea of Game Informer revealed this piece of information after talking directly to the creative director.

According to his statement, Ubisoft has created a map that will gradually reveal its many secrets. The fog hiding the map is said to dissipate over the course of the game as players visit new areas.

As you explore, the fog dissipates where you go.

Interestingly, another Massive Entertainment release from last year featured a similar mechanic. Avatar: Frontiers of Pandora did not rely on classic Ubisoft towers, though it came with many of the typical tropes this publisher is known for.

Therefore, it will be interesting to see how Star Wars Outlaws fares when compared to the rest of this studio’s output.

Star Wars Outlaws Is The Most Detailed Game In The Series

One major criticism of towers is that they can end up becoming a chore. Star Wars Outlaws is unlikely to feature much elevation, to begin with, so Ubisoft appears to have made a wise decision.

However, Assassin’s Creed Red, expected to launch in the same year, will likely mark the return of this mechanic. Most fans are unlikely to mind the inclusion in this instance since tower climbing and leaps of faith are part of Assassin’s Creed’s core identity.

Star Wars Outlaws blasts its way on consoles and PCs in August. From its length to the exploration, the game appears to be setting itself apart from the rest of Ubisoft’s offerings, making it an exciting release for all Star Wars fans alike.
