The talented developers at Respawn Entertainment will take their first foray into current-generation exclusive games with Star Wars Jedi: Survivor. The previous entry, Star Wars Jedi: Fallen Order, can utilize PS5 and Xbox Series X|S hardware for high frame rates, but it was not built for these consoles.
Skipping last-gen consoles allows the studio to explore significantly better hardware, and many fans have been curious about the possibilities for the new Star Wars game as a result of this transition.
In a recent interview with Play Magazine, Director Stig Asmussen revealed that Star Wars Jedi: Survivor skipped PS4 and Xbox One for larger maps, more details, and greater density.
He further stated that the team did not want to break the experience that made Star Wars Jedi: Fallen Order successful. Instead, Respawn Entertainment is looking to enhance the core experience, and the new hardware allows the team to push the game further. He said
“You’ll experience the benefit of the more powerful hardware throughout Survivor. We can create much larger maps with more detail, greater density, broader enemy/NPC variety, and overall fidelity.”
The Director also elaborated on the team’s experience with upgrading the first game for new consoles and how it served as a test run for Star Wars Jedi: Survivor. He further revealed that the team initially planned to implement ray tracing in the Star Wars Jedi: Fallen Order upgrade but decided against it to maintain the art style for the game.
However, Respawn Entertainment has confirmed ray-tracing for the upcoming Star Wars game. The PS5 and Xbox Series S|X should also allow for much faster load times thanks to the move to SSDs.
The game improves upon Star Wars Jedi: Fallen Order in many other areas as well. In addition to the new enemies and gameplay mechanics, the upcoming title will also include much-requested features like fast travel.
While some might be disappointed at the lack of PS4 and Xbox One support, this move will ultimately help the developers realize their true vision for the game without hardware handicaps from weaker consoles.
Star Wars Jedi: Survivor was initially slated for March, but the game was delayed by six weeks to allow the team time to polish the highly anticipated release further. The game will hit current-generation consoles and PC platforms on April 28, 2023.
