Square Enix is famous for games such as the Final Fantasy and Kingdom Hearts franchises. The Japanese gaming giant is known to release various iterations of franchises and has also explored remasters and remakes in recent years.

Following the successful Final Fantasy Pixel Remasters, Square Enix is looking to revisit more old games from its catalog.

Why it matters: Remasters have proven to be extremely profitable for nearly every company in the gaming industry. Square Enix could also revive older games, introducing them to new audiences.

During a Q&A session, Square Enix was asked about plans to remaster older titles. While the company did not confirm anything, it said:

“We are considering various ideas within the Company.”

Furthermore, the studio provided hope to audiences, asking them to stay tuned and look forward to imminent announcements.

The Final Fantasy Pixel remasters from Square Enix have already sold over 2 million copies. This highlights the growing audience for remasters, with the shareholder suggesting a remaster for Xenogears.

During the Q&A, the company was also asked about long gaps between games due to the increasing development times. Replying to the question, Square Enix stated that the company is strengthening its internal development organization.

Previously, the gaming giant confirmed that it is looking to produce AAA titles more frequently. However, more frequent remasters for older titles could allow the company to bridge the gap, keeping players engaged between major AAA games.

In addition to remasters, reports claim remakes are also a priority for the company. Multiple reports have hinted that Final Fantasy 9 is being remade, continuing the trend of remakes in the franchise.
