- PlayStation won’t release any new entry in its existing IPs in the next fiscal year.
- New first-party IPs and live-service games are in the plans.
- Sony expects the first-party software and hardware sales to decline.
Sony just released its earning reports for Q3 FY 2023. It reveals more insight into the business, including the total number of lifetime PS5 units sold, along with sales numbers for its software.
Interestingly, the company also revealed plans for the next fiscal year. According to Sony’s president Hiroki Totoki, PlayStation has no plans to launch any game in its existing franchise for the next fiscal year.
Why it matters: This will mark the first major year for the PS5 without any big first-party releases from PlayStation’s existing catalog.
The next fiscal year begins on April 1, 2024, and ends on March 31, 2025.
PlayStation has several existing first-party franchises that have a huge fan following. These include The Last of Us, Ghost of Tsushima, God of War, Horizon, and more. Therefore, none of these IPs will receive new games till early 2025.
However, this doesn’t mean that Sony doesn’t have any titles planned at all since the statement has been made just for existing IPs.
Regarding first-party software, we aim to continue to focus on producing high-quality works and developing live service games

Still, this means that Sucker Punch Productions will go another year after 2020 without releasing Ghost of Tsushima 2. This game has been in the works for a while, and we still hope to see an official reveal this year, even if the game arrives in 2025.
Both God of War and Horizon received new entries in 2022. Therefore, it should not be surprising that Guerrilla Games and Santa Monica don’t have much to release this year. Naughty Dog also canceled The Last of Us Multiplayer in late 2023.
Live service will be a major focus for Sony this year. Helldivers 2 has been a major hit recently, so this could serve as the template for multiplayer games in the future.
The lack of major output means that Sony expects a decline in first-party sales. However, with enough success from live service IPs, this might not matter much.
This Fiscal Year will see releases like Stellar Blade, Silent Hill 2 Remake, and more third-party exclusives for Sony. The former has already shown plenty of promise, becoming one of Amazon’s best-selling PS5 games ahead of launch.
