The appointment of two new CEOs in place of PlayStation’s Jim Ryan marks the beginning of a new era at PlayStation. This shift also kicks off a change in policy that the new leadership sees fit for the company.

Sony has now allocated a huge $11.5 billion budget for future acquisitions.

Why it matters: PlayStation’s recent acquisitions haven’t been all fruitful as they might have expected, with Bungie Entertainment being one of the bigger problems.

According to Sony’s FY2023 earnings report, they are ready to splash a lot of money on acquiring new studios. It is important to note that while $11.5 billion may sound like a huge sum of money, not all of it will go toward PlayStation.

This sum will include acquisitions in various industries. For instance, Sony was recently rumored to be buying Paramount. Still, Sony Interactive Entertainment will benefit from the strategy.

The announcement has led to anticipations about which studios Sony plans on making its own. Microsoft’s acquisition of Activision Blizzard shook up the industry for better or worse, but Sony is unlikely to pursue a merger of this scale.

It intends to be more selective with future buyouts. In the future, the gaming giant could increase its investment further in Kadokawa Group, the parent company of FromSoftware.

It could also look toward teams like Shift Up after Stellar Blade’s recent success.

Many fans now wonder if more acquisitions are feasible for Sony. The gaming giant has suffered from layoffs and studio closures recently, with many problems stemming from the increasing size of its first-party teams.

Currently, Sony boasts world-class studios like Naughty Dog, Insomniac Games, and Guerrilla Games as part of PlayStation Studios. With teams that are this capable already working under Sony, fans have raised the question of whether Sony even needs to acquire more studios for its gaming division.
