Story Highlight
  • Micron and Nvidia are set to debut GDDR7 memory, promising significant performance improvements over previous generations.
  • The GeForce RTX 5000 series, likely featuring GDDR7, could see up to a 48% boost in ray tracing and a 42% improvement in rasterization.
  • The introduction of GDDR7 memory is expected to steadily improve GPU gaming performance over the next few years.

As long-term partners in the manufacturing industry, Micron and Nvidia are expected to return with another partnership for the GeForce RTX 5000 series. Said to utilize the GDDR7 memory, the GeForce RTX 5090 will be a major powerhouse.

According to Micron, GDDR7 can outperform GDDR6 by 3.1 times and GDDR6X by 1.5 times, respectively.

Why it matters: This slide may be the first official peek at the performance numbers for Nvidia’s next-generation flagship.

One of Micron’s slide decks, which displays the gaming performance of GDDR7, contains even more crucial information. The slide mentioned above, however, offers information on both rasterization and ray tracing performance in games.

Cyberpunk 2077 is one real-world benchmark for ray tracing, and this may also be the case in this instance, as the graphs indicate that path racing was used in this instance. Another educated guess for the rasterization performance would be games like Assassin’s Creed Mirage or Starfield.

To obtain GDDR6 reference, testing was probably conducted on high-end cards from both AMD and Nvidia. While we don’t know exactly what models were used, the Radeon RX 7900XTX and GeForce RTX 4090 would make the most sense since they are the best from both companies.

It is also speculated that the GeForce RTX 5090 represents GDDR7 performance here. Therefore, it indicates that Nvidia is set to offer up to 50% ray tracing boost and 42% rasterization boost for its latest xx90 tier graphics card.

In any case, GPU gaming performance will steadily improve over the next few years due to the introduction of GDDR7 memory and its relatively high target clock speeds.

Gaming performance is greatly impacted by GPU memory bandwidth; larger bandwidth is needed for higher resolutions such as 4K. While compute units and frequency also play their part, memory bandwidth must be increased sufficiently to improve GPU performance.
