Architectural Differences
- Clock Speed: The RTX 4080 Super has faster clock speeds, running at 2295 MHz and up to 2550 MHz. The RX 7800 XT, on the other hand, has a base clock of 1295 MHz that goes up to the boost clock of 2124 MHz.
- VRAM: Both GPUs come with 16 GB VRAM. The RTX 4080 Super has a superior VRAM buffer of 16GB of GDDR6X memory. The RX 7800 XT relies on a slightly slower GDDR6 memory. Both GPUs share the same 256-bit memory bus.
- TDP: AMD takes the point here, as they managed to release RX 7800 XT with a remarkably low TDP of 262 watts compared to the RTX 4080 Super which comes with a much bigger TDP of 320 watts.
- Process Node: Another spec that both of our competing graphics cards seem to share with each other is the process node. Both graphics cards come with the 5 nm process node made by TSMC.
- Other Technologies: This is the aspect where Nvidia shines the brightest. Both GPUs come with their own version of AI upscaling like AMD’s FSR and Nvidia’s DLSS 3 and Frame generation. However, the RTX 4080 Super has both.
Both Nvidia and AMD had price cuts in their last line of GPUs. So the situation redeemed us fit to get our hands on two of the newly released GPUs by both these manufacturers and let them lock horns against each other in a comparison to see which one emerges victorious. The GPUs in the equation are RTX 4080 Super Vs RX 7800 XT.
Gaming Tests – 2160p
To ensure fair competition, we have tailored this testing rig specifically for this comparison to ensure there are zero bottlenecks and most of the load falls directly on the graphics cards. This will enable us to closely monitor the performance difference of both GPUs without leaving any performance on the table.

- The 1% lows saw an 18% difference in favor of the RTX 4080 Super. This time around, it provided an average of 91 1% low fps. In comparison to that, the RX 7800 XT maxed out at 76 fps.
Overall Gaming Performance
Featured | RTX 4080 Super | RX 7800 XT |
Average FPS | 124 📈 | 92 📈 |
%1 lows | 102 📉 | 78 📉 |
Winner: Nvidia's RTX 4080 Super |
As per our observation, the RTX 4080 Super totally wiped the floor with RX 7800 XT during our gaming benchmark. In terms of average fps, it was 30% ahead, of the average data of seven games at 2160p resolution. As for the 1% lows, things are not different here either, as the RX 7800 XT is still behind by a margin of 26%.
So far, the RTX 4080 Super does appear to be a much better GPU in almost every workload. However, performance is not the only aspect you consider when it comes to buying a new GPU. It also costs significantly more than its competitor and not a lot of people would be willing to bear that price tag.

Speaking of thermal efficiency, our analysis states that the RTX 4080 Super ran roughly 12% cooler than the RX 7800 XT. This could be due to its beefier heatsink. Either way, it is the more thermal efficient out of the two and if temperatures are of a concern for you, then you should definitely be looking into this.
Price And Value
Graphics Card | Launch MSRP | Current Price |
RTX 4080 Super | 💲999 | 💲999 |
RX 7800 XT | 💲499 | 💲499 |
Difference | 66.7% | 66.7% |
At launch price, the RTX 4080 Super is roughly 66% more expensive than the RX 7800 XT. Since both these GPUs are fairly new, you are unlikely to find them for lower than their MSRP. This makes the case a bit tricky for the RTX 4080 Super, as it is not easy to justify that hefty thousand-dollar price tag.
What We Recommend
RX 7800 XT: Despite being dominated in almost every benchmark we conducted today, it is easier for us to recommend the RX 7800 XT because of its price tag and value. It performs 30% worse in games, but it is also 66% cheaper. That easily makes it the better bang for the buck.
RTX 4080 Super: Unlike its competitor, the RTX 4080 Super is a premium flagship card and you have to pay a premium for it as well. It costs significantly more but you can’t ignore its merits. It has dominated every single one of our benchmarks, while also running cooler. This is before we even factor in DLSS and Frame generation.
Both RTX 4080 Super and RX 7800 XT are very capable GPUs and you can not go wrong with either of them. However, they are both launched for different consumers with different budgets. Whether you should go for Team Red or Team Green will depend greatly on your use case and how much you are willing to spend.
Frequently Asked Questions
DLSS is limited to Nvidia GPUs only. The RX 7800 XT features AMD’s FSR as an alternate.
Both these GPUs were released within 6 months of each other so we should not expect a drastic difference in their longevity as both Nvidia and AMD will support them for a while.
Our RTX 4080 Super had a beefier heatsink and ran 12% cooler, so if you dwell in a warm climate zone, you should consider that.
