The next generation of graphics cards is nearly upon us. Nvidia and AMD are gearing up to launch their most powerful graphics cards, and many rumors have been painting an exciting picture of the new desktop graphics cards. Both companies are expected to release their flagship products later this year.

Rumors regarding the Nvidia GeForce RTX 40 series based on Ada Lovelace have concerned many of us regarding power requirements. However, things might not be as bad as initial rumors had predicted. New information from reputed leaker kopite7kimi has revealed an updated figure for Nvidia’s GeForce RTX 4070 and RTX 4080 cards.

The leaker expects the GeForce RTX 4070 to come with a TBP of 285W. Similarly, the GeForce RTX 4080 is rumored to come with a TBP of 320W. This is a far cry from the outrageous figures that leaks had initially predicted. Many sources have reported up to 600W power draws for Nvidia’s higher-end cards, but it seems like the GeForce RTX 4070, and GeForce RTX 4080 will not suffer from those figures.

Interestingly, the GeForce RTX 4080’s 320W TBP (Total Board Power including GPU Core, PCB, cooling solution, fans, and RGB lighting system) is the same as Nvidia GeForce RTX 3080. The GeForce RTX 4080 is expected to offer a massive jump in performance over the GeForce RTX 3080, which is impressive considering the same power requirements

In terms of specifications, the GeForce RTX 4080 looks very impressive. The upcoming graphics card will feature a cut-down AD103-300 GPU with 76 SMs enabled out of 84 units. Nvidia’s RTX 4080 will also come with 48MB of L2 Cache and 214 ROPS.

Additionally, the RTX 4080 is expected to come with 16 GB of GDDR6X memory running at 21Gbps. The RTX 4080 will also include a 256-bit bus, leading to about 672 GB/s bandwidth. Moreover, the upcoming GPU is also expected to come with boost frequencies of 2500 MHz or more.

RTX 4070

This should lead to a sizable performance upgrade of 60-70% per watt over the RTX 3080. The RTX 3080 has nearly 30 TFLOPS computing power, and the predicted specifications lead to approximately 50 TFLOPS for the RTX 4080. However, it should be noted that the increase in compute power might not translate directly to improved gaming performance.

This sounds exciting for tech enthusiasts and consumers looking to upgrade their graphics cards. Last-generation GPUs like the RTX 3080 finally made 4K gaming a viable option for the masses. With huge performance upgrades expected over the last generation, Nvidia could now be looking at bringing high refresh rate gaming to 4K displays.

Furthermore, Nvidia’s upcoming cards will also use technologies such as DLSS and third-generation RT cores. While a price is not specific, Nvidia could look at a similar price point to the last generation RTX 3080. This would make the GeForce RTX 4080 a worthy addition to current, and future gaming PC builds.

Nvidia is expected to launch GeForce RTX 40-series graphics cards in Q4 of 2022, possibly as early as September.
