Design

Let’s take a closer look at both cables.

PRIME for Motherboard

The extension cable is 222×64.2x15mm in size. It has a simple design with a 16 AWG cable overlapped by optical-sleeved cables containing 36 ARGB LEDs. The optical sleeves are translucent white for a vibrant light show. The 150mm ± 10mm optical sleeve has ARGB LEDs housed in a frame on top of a 24-pin ATX connector with a glossy and matte finish featuring XPG branding. A single cable extends from this housing, connecting to the PSU’s 24-pin power cable.

Following is the LED information on this VGA cable:

LED ARGB LED 1.5×1.5×0.65mm, LED-ICR001
Voltage +5VDC
Current 0.54A ± 5%
Luminance 100 nits + 20%
Color Index 80
No of LEDs 36

Check the extension cable’s underside. It has white mesh-sleeved cables, 16 AWG thick, with pure copper strands for less resistance. The white sleeve matches translucent optical fibre sleeves for even lighting. The connector on the right end connects to the motherboard’s 24-pin ATX header. The ARGB LED housing has combs for routing power cables and maintaining the cable shape. Access the PCB by removing three screws on the housing’s underside.

PRO TIP: To achieve the best RGB synchronization, daisy-chain the XPG Prime ARGB Extension Cables and connect them to a single controller for a more cost-effective setup.

The extension cable has two connectors: a 3-pin male and a 3-pin female. You can connect the motherboard ARGB extension cable with VGA ARGB extension cables for synchronized lighting. The 69cm+10cm flat cable is for XPG PRIME ARGB Extension Cable. It has an ARGB controller that works for the motherboard but not the VGA. The small controller has two buttons to toggle between 8 lighting modes and control speed in dynamic modes.

The controller is SATA-powered and has another 3-pin connector for connectivity. The length of the cable is 100cm, which is plenty.

PRIME for VGA

The overall dimension for the VGA ARGB extension cable is 222 x 28 x 15 mm. XPG has bundled two 8-pin extension cables in a single pack. This should cover most of the graphics cards in the market except for the 3000 series cards requiring triple 8-pin connectors or other beefy cards. These cables have the same design outfit as the ARGB extension cable for the motherboard.

WARNING: Ensure compatibility with your motherboard’s digital lighting headers, as connecting these 5VDC extension cables to incompatible 12V headers may potentially damage the LEDs.

Following is the LED information on this VGA ARGB extension cable:

LED ARGB LED 1.5×1.5×0.65mm, LED-ICR001
Voltage +5VDC
Current 0.18A ± 5%
Luminance 100 nits + 20%
Color Index 80
No of LEDs 12 * 2

The optical fibre sleeve has a length of 150mm ± 10mm. We have the same inner white colour sleeves on the power cables. The right side connector shown in the picture will be connected to the 6+2 pin PEG cable from the PSU. The other end goes to the graphics card. Small-size housing can be seen in the picture with XPG branding on it. A 3-pin ARGBN cable is coming out of this housing. The cable is flat and has a length of 69 cm+10 cm. Much like what we have seen on the motherboard ARGB extension cable, the ARGB extension cable for the VGA also has dual connectors on the power cable. Each connector has a 3-pin definition.

RGB Testing

The lighting shown on these cables is stunning, to say the least. Sure, one is paying bucks for this killer show, but it would not disappoint the user. Here are some pictures:

Should You Buy It?

By conducting an in-depth analysis of XPG Prime ARGB Extension Cables, my judgment is:

Buy It If

✅ You Prioritize Top-Notch RGB Customization: If you prioritize high-quality RGB customization and synchronization, these extension cables boast 16 AWG pure copper strands for efficient power delivery and feature translucent white optical fibre sleeves, providing a stunning lighting show.

✅ You Want Reliability and Durability: If you’re seeking a reliable and durable solution, the XPG Prime ARGB Extension Cables are crafted with quality materials, ensuring longevity.

Don’t Buy It If

❌ You’re Not Interested in RGB: If RGB customization is not your priority or you’re on a budget, these extension cables may not be the most suitable option, as they cater to users who value a premium RGB experience.

❌ You Have an Incompatible Motherboard: If your motherboard lacks digital lighting headers or operates on 12V headers, these extension cables, designed for 5VDC, may not be suitable. Connecting them to incompatible headers could potentially damage the LEDs.

Final Words

XPG’s PRIME RGB cables bring exciting news for RGB enthusiasts, enhancing the gaming experience with vibrant lights on the motherboard’s 24-pin ATX and graphics card’s PEG cables. These ARGB Extension Cables use 16 AWG pure copper for efficient power delivery and feature translucent white optical fibre sleeves for a dazzling lighting show. They operate on 5VDC and should connect to the motherboard’s digital lighting headers. Avoid connecting them to 12V headers, as it may damage the LEDs.

The Motherboard ARGB Extension Cable has 36 LEDs, while the VGE ARGB Extension Cable has 12. The motherboard cable includes a dedicated controller, whereas the VGA cables don’t. Both cables can be daisy-chained and connected to a single controller, saving money. They are compatible with ASUS AURA SYNC, GIGABYTE RGB FUSION READY, MSI MYSTIC LIGHT SYNC, and ASRock RGB LED. Both cables have a 2-year warranty.
