- Resident Evil 9 has been in development since 2018.
- A recent leak has suggested that Dragon’s Dogma 2, Resident Evil 9, and Monster Hunter Wilds all use Capcom’s new open-world tech.
- This could mean that Resident Evil 9 will be open-world.
The Resident Evil franchise hit its stride in 2017 again, showing no signs of stopping since then. The latest entry, Resident Evil 4 Remake, has already sold over 7 million units in just one year, claiming the title of this IP’s fastest-selling game.
Capcom has reportedly been working on another game for the franchise, Resident Evil 9. This entry has been in the works for quite a while and is described as a highly ambitious title. In fact, it could be taking the series in an open-world direction.
Why it matters: The latest Resident Evil games have followed a similar format. Therefore, an open-world approach could be a breath of fresh air for the series.
(1/2) So here's a little tidbit I'll share, Capcom often will greenlight new initiatives in 3's closer together. Decent examples are RE7, RE:2 & DMCV were all Greenlit fairly close together to take advantage of their new RE Engine, & the idea to remake RE:2 inspired them to also

This news comes from the very reliable horror game leaker Dusk Golem. He states that Dragon’s Dogma 2, Resident Evil 9, and Monster Hunter Wilds are sharing Capcom’s open-world tech.
According to his new leak, the publisher often greenlights new initiatives in groups of three. He gave an example of projects like Resident Evil 7, Resident Evil 2, and Devil May Cry 5, which were also given the green light at once.
Elaborating on the recent projects, Dusk Golem states they will retain the core series DNA. This statement likely means that Resident Evil 9 will either commit to a fully open-world design or semi-open-world gameplay while retaining the core identity.
All three project goals has been to retain the series DNA. The same will be true for RE9.

For the unfamiliar, Dragon’s Dogma 2 is the first truly open-world game on the RE Engine.
In the past, this technology has been praised for producing class-leading visuals and animations without compromising performance. However, the open-world transition has not been the smoothest.
Dragon’s Dogma 2 suffers from poor 1% lows on PC, frequent sub-30FPS dips on consoles, and more. Therefore, we hope Capcom’s future implementations will be better.
Very little is known about Monster Hunter Wilds and Resident Evil 9, but the same leaker has suggested that the latter is planned to be released next year, and an official announcement is expected to be made sometime later this year.
