Rumors regarding the specifications and other details of the Nintendo Switch 2 have been making the rounds on the internet for a while, especially after it was reported that the Nintendo Switch 2 was shown to developers at Gamescom 2023.

Reports claimed the console was demoed to developers with Zelda: Breath of the Wild with higher frame rates and resolutions than the current iteration of the Nintendo Switch allows.

Following this report, it appears Nintendo has already met Activision to discuss the Nintendo Switch 2.

Why it matters: The Nintendo Switch has been a game changer for Nintendo due to its unique hybrid model, leading to high expectations for the gaming giant’s next major console release.

As noted by The Verge, internal documents of the court case between FTC and Microsoft revealed Activision was briefed on the Nintendo Switch 2 in late 2022.

Activision CEO Bobby Kotick met with Nintendo in December 2022 to discuss the console, and Activision summarized the details of the meeting in a document titled ‘Switch NG(next generation).’

This meeting likely became the basis for Activision’s predictions of the console’s performance. Earlier in June, Bobby Kotick claimed that the new hardware would offer performance close to PS4 and Xbox One.

The latest document reveals that this was not a mere guess by the Activision CEO, and he was aware of the target specifications from Nintendo.

Recent leaks suggest that the Nintendo Switch 2 will launch with 12GB of RAM, which is more than the Xbox Series S, as the latter comes with 10GB of memory.

It has also been suggested that the console will support Unreal Engine 5 titles, in addition to ray tracing and upscaling technologies like DLSS.

The full specifications have yet to be revealed, but reports claim Nintendo aims to release its next console during the second half of 2024.

Several other leaks are expected by then, revealing even more details about Nintendo’s plans for the next generation. Meanwhile, the Nintendo Switch continues to be the dominant console in 2023, having sold nearly 130 million units to date.
