  • CDPR has denied the use of microtransactions in single-player games.
  • It will only consider this practice for future multiplayer projects.
  • The Witcher 4 and Cyberpunk 2077 are expected to come without microtransactions.

Microtransactions are the most common form of monetization in the gaming industry. This practice has evolved over the years, putting the industry at a point where people have gotten comfortable dishing out up to $30 for basic skins.

However, despite the popularity of this practice, not every developer is in favor of microtransactions. In particular, CDPR suggests that they should not be part of single-player games.

Why it matters: It has become far too common for developers to spoil their single-player games with microtransactions. Dragon’s Dogma 2 was the latest game to receive criticism for this practice.

Cyberpunk 2077 Is A Complete Package Today

Stockwatch reported on a recent CDPR investor’s group conference. During the conversation, the subject of microtransactions was brought up, and the studio was asked whether this form of monetization would be added in future games.

Piotr Nielubowicz from CDPR was quick to reply that this would not be the case, at least for single-player games.

However, he acknowledged that they could come in handy for multiplayer games, stating that CDPR remains open to microtransactions in this case.

Fortunately, the studio is best known for its single-player works, and games like The Witcher 4 are its most anticipated upcoming projects. The developer’s latest success, Cyberpunk 2077, recently reached $750 million in revenue.

It did so without relying on microtransactions, providing a feature-rich expansion in terms of post-launch content. Elsewhere, the genre-defining Witcher 3 followed a similar pattern.

CDPR Is Among The Few Developers To Avoid Microtransactions

Interestingly, this is not the first time CDPR has ruled out microtransactions. The developer has become famous for raising its voice against the practice, earning it the reputation it currently enjoys.

CDPR is currently focused on The Witcher 4. While details about the RPG are not expected for a while, fans can at least rest assured that microtransactions are unlikely to be a part of the package at launch.
