- Immortals of Aveum was released in the crowded last week of August.
- It failed to attract players at launch and wasn’t a commercial success.
- The CEO of the studio states that massive AAA launches and surprise hits became a part of this failure.
While this year will be remembered for a very long time by gaming fans due to fresh and distinct experiences throughout the year, it has been a nightmare for some developers.
August, in particular, saw great releases like Armored Core 6 and Baldurs Gate 3. The latter is currently the leading contender for the GOTY Award and has already won several awards. Immortals of Aveum was also released in the same month.
The first two attracted players quickly, while Immortals of Aveum was left in the dust and became a failure.
Why it matters: This game’s failure has led to various problems for Ascendant Studios, forcing the CEO to carry out more than a few layoffs.
During a recent interview with Windows Central, the CEO of Ascendant Studios, Bret Robbins, talked about the game’s poor sales.
When the CEO was asked whether he thought that the year full of releases had an impact on the commercial success of the game, Bret Robbins stated:
“100%.”
He believes the studio was not in a position to delay the release of the game as it was already planned long ago. The developer had planned a budget based around this date, so changing it at the last moment was out of the question.
Bret Robbins explained that Ascendant Studios knew August would be crowded because of releases like Armored Core 6 and Starfield. However, the studio was also shocked by the success of Baldur’s Gate 3.
He stated:
” It’s always hard for a new IP and this year made it 10 times harder.”
The CEO also addressed the recent layoffs at Ascendant Studios. Bret Robbins claims that the developer is not a big corporation. This means that success is crucial, and the latest failure left him with no choice but to lay off developers.
We believe that the CEO isn’t entirely wrong. Games like Baldur’s Gate 3 and Starfield ensured that millions were distracted, leaving little room for newer IPs to shine.
Still, the studio hopes to make up for this disappointment through subscription services. In the future, he expects Immortals of Aveum to arrive on PS Plus and Game Pass, possibly giving the game another shot at popularity.
