- A reliable insider says Microsoft is re-releasing Halo: Combat Evolved.
- The game could be headed to the PS5.
- Other games that could be going to the PS5 include Starfield, Hellblade 2, and more.
Halo may no longer be the biggest Xbox IP, but it certainly is Microsoft’s most iconic. Having spanned over four generations, this franchise continues to provide thrilling multiplayer gameplay and memorable stories.
All of this began in 2001 with Bungie’s Halo: Combat Evolved on the original Xbox. While this entry has since been overshadowed by Halo 2 and 3, it seems Microsoft intends to bring it back in a completely unexpected way.
Why it matters: There is still plenty of demand for classic Halo gameplay, so a re-release of the first entry could bring back old fans who enjoyed Bungie’s offering more.
As reported by The Verge, Xbox is currently working on a new version of Halo: Combat Evolved. The report does not clarify whether the project is a remake, but we’re inclined to believe it is since the first entry has already been remastered.
Boot up Halo: The Master Chief Collection on PC or Xbox consoles today, and you can play a remastered version of Combat Evolved. Therefore, it would not make much sense for Xbox to remaster the original game again, leading us to believe that the title is being remade.
Anyhow, this is not the most interesting part of the report. Remakes and remasters are common in the industry due to their profitability, making them a no-brainer, especially when discussing an IP as big as Halo.
What’s surprising here is that The Verge states this remake is being considered for the PS5. In a quite fitting turn of events, Halo may be gearing up to make its PS5 debut, starting with the very first outing of Master Chief.
Recently, games like Hi-Fi Rush and Sea of Thieves launched on the PS5. Moreover, the report states that Starfield and Hellblade 2 are being considered for similar treatment, though Xbox wants to keep Gears 6 exclusive.
This is certainly exciting news for Halo fans. However, porting Xbox’s biggest IP to PlayStation may not be a wise decision.
While we’re all for multi-platform gaming and more availability, Halo is practically a part of Microsoft’s gaming identity. Separating it could be seen as Microsoft sacrificing its core identity among the masses.
