The gaming industry has come a long way over the last few decades. Thanks to advancements in technology, the industry has been able to depict memorable moments and awe-inspiring narratives.
Recent games like God of War and The Witcher 3 are popular for their focus on story-telling. While these offerings continue to offer compelling gameplay, their focus on characters, world-building, and narratives has also garnered praise from fans of other mediums.
These incredible stories are among the reasons TV adaptations like The Last of Us have been able to flourish. Following impressive stories in the genre, a new study claims that many believe gaming has pulled ahead of TV and films in terms of narratives.
Why it matters: This is an incredible move forward for the industry, with a shift in the general perception. Previously, many believed that gaming would never be able to tell compelling stories like iconic films.
According to the study, 67% of over 1000 voters have the opinion that gaming now offers superior stories compared to films and TV.
The recent focus on small details of voice acting, animation, and story writing has led to quick progress in this department. Various characters like Kratos, Arthur Morgan, and Nathan Drake have also left their mark on the industry.
Furthermore, popular actors have recently requested gaming adaptations on the big screen. This includes actors like Jack Black, who wants to see the story of Red Dead Redemption’s Arthur Morgan on TV.
In addition to the poll, the study also attempted to find the greatest story in the medium. Following research from Google, Reddit, Youtube, and various articles, the study concluded that The Last of Us takes the top spot.
Naughty Dog’s title is followed by God of War, Red Dead Redemption 2, and The Witcher 3 on the list.
With the industry’s current direction, gaming stories and characters will continue to improve. The industry is attempting to merge gameplay and story-telling for incredible experiences, leading to plenty of potential for upcoming releases.
