- Sekiro: Shadows Die Twice, one of FromSoftware’s biggest games, is popular for its difficulty as well as satisfying combat.
- It set a new tone for combat that carried over into future games, including Elden Ring.
- However, Hidetaka Miyazaki has revealed that he intends to surpass its combat in a future game.
Sekiro: Shadows Die Twice is hailed as the game having the best combat ever. It was also quite special for FromSoftware since it marked a huge shift away from the traditional slower combat of past games.
FromSoftware hasn’t given this title special treatment as it didn’t receive a DLC, let alone a sequel. However, the team still acknowledges that combat was a huge plus point in Sekiro: Shadows Die Twice.
In a recent interview, director Hidetaka Miyazaki revealed that the team intends to surpass this combat system in future games.
Why it matters: Sekiro: Shadows Die Twice’s combat is fast and fluid. The parry system also adds a new element of skill to the experience.
Speaking to GameInformer, Hidetaka Miyazaki reveals how Sekiro was the turning point for FromSoftware to help manage offense and defense in its games.
I think there’s one more level we can crank it up to and sharpen that and hone in on that mechanic even more.
-Hidetaka Miyazaki
According to Miyazaki, there’s room for further growth in FromSoftware’s combat systems. He intends to crank the combat up a notch. Previously, Elden Ring already showed quite a few improvements that made the gameplay more aggressive.
This statement is also interesting since Hidetaka Miyazaki has stated that his perfect RPG is yet to come. Perhaps the refined combat mechanics will be part of the ideal RPG.
It is evident that Sekiro’s combat system is extremely polished, sharp, and fluid. FromSoftware’s statement is a bold one because the team nearly perfected the parry-based system in 2019 already. However, it also sets an exciting precedent for future releases.
The combat of Sekiro: Shadows Die Twice is already so breathtaking that we can’t imagine how it can be improved further. Still, if there’s anybody that can do it, FromSoftware is the most likely one.
The team has surpassed everyone’s expectations with the upcoming Elden Ring DLC, which puts many single-player games to shame. Therefore, regarding the quality of future games, fans don’t have anything to worry about.
