The Elder Scrolls 6 is the next major focus for Bethesda Game Studios. Following Starfield, the studio has begun early work on the project, following its goals to make it the ultimate fantasy simulator.
However, PlayStation fans have been worried, citing concerns that Microsoft may decide to keep this iconic RPG series limited to Xbox consoles in the future. Although Phil Spencer has stated that exclusivity remains undecided, a new document hints otherwise.
Why it matters: The Elder Scrolls 5 remains one of Bethesda Game Studios’ best-rated games to date and has sold over 60 million units. Therefore, excitement for the next entry is already brewing across the industry.
Despite Phil Spencer’s claims, Xbox documents from the recent case against the FTC have again suggested that the game is scheduled to be an Xbox exclusive.
According to the document, The Elder Scrolls 6 will be released on Xbox and PC, much like Microsoft’s other first-party offerings. While games like Deathloop are listed for PlayStation in the document, the same cannot be said for The Elder Scrolls 6.
It appears PlayStation fans had already foreseen such a future as they started a petition demanding a PS5 release for the RPG. Nonetheless, recent evidence suggests that this is unlikely to happen.
The same document reveals that The Elder Scrolls 6 is expected to arrive by 2026 at the earliest, which is subject to change. Given Starfield took eight years to create, the 2026 target might be too optimistic.
Previously, Phil Spencer claimed the game would not be released until 2028, but a few days later, a Microsoft lawyer hinted that the game would be launched in 2026. The document reiterates the latter’s statement.
While The Elder Scrolls 6 is expected to be just one part of Bethesda Softworks’ overall library, an email has suggested that Microsoft plans to limit the publisher’s entire library to the Xbox ecosystem.
This would include future games from studios like MachineGames, id Software, and Tango Gameworks.
The Elder Scrolls 5: Skyrim has set high expectations for the next entry in the series. Skyrim is over a decade old and is still beloved due to its engaging RPG systems and modding community.
Todd Howard has previously claimed that exclusivity allowed the studio to make Starfield a better product. If the document is anything to go by, Microsoft will continue this approach for The Elder Scrolls, but the game may turn out to be a better RPG as a result.
