The Elder Scrolls 5: Skyrim was released back in 2011 and went on to sell over 60 million units. Bethesda Game Studios has also revealed The Elder Scrolls 6, which is next in line after the studio’s upcoming release of Starfield.
Over five years after the announcement of The Elder Scrolls 6, not much is known about the studio’s ambitions for the project. However, Todd Howard has recently spoken about the game in an interview.
According to GQ, Todd Howard wants to fill the void of the ultimate fantasy in gaming.
Why it matters: The Elder Scrolls is among the most recognized IPs in the RPG genre, and it has established its place as one of the best through several decades of innovative and ground-breaking releases.
When Howard was asked about what he would want to achieve with the game, he said:
“We want it to fill that role of the ultimate fantasy-world simulator.”
The Director previously revealed that he wished Bethesda could release the game sooner, and he also explained that the game is still years away, admitting that the extended gap between Skyrim and The Elder Scrolls 6 is not ideal.
Since the fandom is extremely large, millions of fans are anticipating another grand adventure in The Elder Scrolls universe. However, Bethesda Game Studios has been occupied with Starfield for the last eight years.
In terms of Todd Howard’s aim of the ultimate fantasy simulator, this could mean The Elder Scrolls 6 will offer unprecedented levels of freedom and exploration, allowing players to completely immerse themselves in a living and breathing game world.
With Starfield going gold, Bethesda Game Studios can gradually shift focus to The Elder Scrolls 6.
Previously, Phil Spencer revealed that the game would not be released before 2028. However, days after this statement, a Microsoft lawyer hinted at a 2026 release window.
Therefore, an exact release window has not been provided, but it is clear that the game is not coming anytime soon.
