Following the success of the Elden ring, FromSoftware has been working to expand the game. This includes an upcoming expansion, Shadow of the Erdtree. The expansion has been in development since 2022 and should encourage players to revisit Elden Ring.
While it was already understood that Shadow of the Erdtree would be a massive expansion, a new report suggests that FromSoftware initially planned to release 2 separate DLCs for Elden Ring.
However, the developer merged both planned DLCs into one major expansion.
Why it matters: Merging the two DLC ensures that players have plenty of content and get enough value for the price of the expansion.
The report comes from popular dataminer Lance McDonald who has previously reported on FromSoftware games like Dark Souls 3 and Bloodborne.
Previously, the studio took a similar approach with Bloodborne, combining DLCs into The Old Hunters expansion. This could mean that Shadow of the Erdtree will be just as big, if not bigger, than The Old Hunters.
FromSoftware has a history of offering new weapons, bosses, and new locations with each new DLC. As such, Elden Ring fans can expect similar offerings from the Shadow of the Erdtree.
A release date for the DLC has still not been announced yet, but the developer is gearing up to release Armored Core 6 in August 2023. This could mean that the Elden Ring expansion is still a few months away.
Looking at Kadokawa’s forecast for the current fiscal year, there is no mention of the DLC. This fiscal year ends in March 2024, and this may be further evidence that the DLC is a few months away.
Nonetheless, the report suggests that Shadow of the Erdtree will include plenty of content to keep FromSoftware fans busy, potentially offering the most content in a DLC release from the studio yet.
