Story Highlights
  • EA says generative AI will allow them to build more immersive and innovative worlds.
  • The technology will be more streamlined in three to five years and will improve upon current development elements.
  • Other studios like CDPR and Square Enix also intend to use AI for their titles.

Artificial intelligence is set to become a huge part of game development moving forward. Recent surveys showed that 30% of developers currently rely on AI for development, and the number will only go up.

Now, EA has also backed AI for their future projects.

Why it matters: AI will allow a lot of new possibilities that were not previously seen in games. It could also help with the problem of long development cycles.

EA wants generative AI to improve development processes in the future

Talking during their Q4 2024 earnings, EA CEO Andrew Wilson stated that the company anticipates it can achieve much more with development through the help of generative AI. This technology will open new grounds for development that EA is eager to explore.

We believe more than 50% of our development processes will be positively impacted by generative AI. We will be able to build bigger, more immersive worlds.

-EA CEO Andrew Wilson

Generative AI will lead to more innovative and immersive worlds, according to EA. The CEO further stated that their studios are ‘hungry’ to use the tech. However, this usage will become more mainstream three to five years from now.

He further explained that artificial intelligence does not aim to replace something that they already have. It aims to improve upon things that already exist. That’s a good sign, as there are also fears that AI could soon replace humans in various places.

Take-Two Has Also Acknowledged The Potential of AI For Game Development.

Other studios are also focusing on artificial intelligence. Both CD Projekt Red and Square Enix have revealed they’re using AI for future titles, while Take-Two hinted at AI-powered NPCs for the future.

Alongside studios, chip manufacturers have also made AI a center point. With technologies like DLSS, AI is targeting nearly all gaming segments today.

Now, the real question is whether AI will revolutionize gaming or if it will be a major miss. That, for now, is too early to judge, as games don’t rely too much on this technology today.

However, developers certainly seem excited to get their hands on more mainstream AI implementations.
