Diablo Immortal by Blizzard Entertainment launched on mobile devices two weeks ago. The game launched to an uproar by the fans who couldn’t understand the decision behind the in-game microtransactions. While the game is free-to-play, the amount you have to pay in microtransactions is quite hefty.
To be exact, it costs you $110,000 to max out your character. While in some games, in-game purchases don’t affect the gameplay, in Diablo Immortal, it does. Despite this issue, the game has continued to be downloaded and has displayed pretty good stats overall.
Diablo Immortal is the biggest launch in franchise history in just one week, with more than 10 million downloads in the first week.

Despite the massive uproar on the microtransactions, in the first two weeks of Diablo Immortal’s release, they have produced $24 million US, with gamers in the United States and South Korea spending the most on in-game purchases. Around 43% of spenders are from the US, 23% from South Korea, and 8% from Japan, with the rest 26% divided amongst the rest of the world.
According to industry tracking website AppMagic, Blizzard’s newest RPG has been downloaded more than 10 million times since its June 2 release, becoming the developer’s second-highest mobile earner, trailing only the all-powerful Hearthstone, which debuted in 2014.
Though $24 million in earnings doesn’t seem as big compared to other mobile games. For a comparison, Genshin Impact made $60 million in the first week of its launch. But considering how the game was being reviewed and criticized, the number seems very promising. And the numbers are only increasing along with an increase in the overall rating of the game. This could be largely due to the reason that you can at least have around 20 hours of gameplay without needing to make any purchase which is quite satisfactory for some people.
Initially, the game could only manage a rating of 0.2 stars on Metacritic, which has since improved and is now 3.6. It has been promising how Diablo Immortal has gained the ground back from being a sinking ship. But, we still hope Blizzard can do more to improve reviews. Until then, stay tuned for any news updates.
Have you spent money on Diablo Immortal microtransactions, and how have they impacted your gameplay? We would love to hear your thoughts.
