Story Highlights
  • The CDPR narrative director says Cyberpunk 2077 was just a warm-up for them.
  • The next installment, titled Project Orion, could be even more ambitious.
  • The statement comes after the very successful release of Phantom Liberty.

Cyberpunk 2077 is the best example of why you should never give up on something. Released in 2020, the game was a hot mess. It had everything from poor optimizations and game-breaking bugs, but CDPR never gave up on it and saw a massive resurgence

Now, CDPR is hyping up its next title, stating that Cyberpunk 2077 was just a warm-up, hinting at going even bigger for its next title.

Why it matters: Following the release of Phantom Liberty, this RPG is considered one of the benchmarks for modern open worlds, ray tracing implementations, and more.

Phantom Liberty was the epitome of CDPR’s skills as RPG developers, showing what the team could do when putting everything into its games.

Having moved on from Cyberpunk 2077 after the final update, a part of CDPR’s team is focused on Project Orion, the sequel to this sci-fi franchise. According to Igor Sarzynski, a narrative director on Project Orion, this sequel will be even more ambitious. He said:

“I’m sure we can make it something special.”

As optimistic as this statement is, it could still backfire in a bad way.

Yes, the developers at CDPR are some of the best out there, but managing expectations is something they should be careful of. Cyberpunk 2077 had all the hype around it, but it was a disappointment at launch.

However, considering that fiasco, CDPR must be more than aware that it has to develop a finished title at launch.

Like everyone else, we are cautiously optimistic about the studio’s future. Project Orion is still many years out, so the developer’s words are encouraging, but we hope the team doesn’t end up overpromising before anything is set in stone.

Despite the studio regretting the decision to release Phantom Liberty so late into Cyberpunk 2077’s lifecycle, attachment rates for the DLC were on par with the content expansions for The Witcher 3.

Phantom Liberty’s massive success has raised expectations from the developer. Having concluded the game’s story on a high note, the studio is focused on delivering something truly groundbreaking, a goal that is also shared by the developers creating The Witcher 4.
