- Capcom has addressed the next version of its RE Engine.
- It states that the REX Engine aims for photorealistic graphics.
- This iteration aims to make the engine more suitable for a wide range of games.
Capcom is one of the finest AAA studios today. Following its comeback with the recent Resident Evil games, the studio has continued to flourish.
Today, Capcom is famous not only for its great games but also for its incredibly versatile RE Engine. Last year, the studio confirmed a new iteration of this engine, dubbed Codename REX. The studio now says that it aims to achieve photorealism with this engine.
Why it matters: Capcom’s in-house technology was on par with the best in the industry, competing against engines like Decima, Northlight, and more.
During Capcom’s 45th Ordinary General Meeting, the publisher was asked about its plans for the evolution of its RE Engine. Replying to the question, Capcom asked shareholders to anticipate future announcements since the team has huge ambitions for its engine.
We are updating development with the aim of improving efficiency and achieving photorealistic graphics technology.

The response confirms that Capcom, like many other studios, is currently aiming to launch games that blur the line between fiction and reality. Since the studio mentions improved efficiency, it likely aims to achieve photorealism without compromising performance.
This was already a strong suit of the RE Engine in the past since it was known to be one of the most optimized engines in the industry.
Games like Devil May Cry 5 and Resident Evil 4 are still among the best-looking last-generation releases. Moreover, both games offered higher than 30FPS gameplay on base last-generation consoles.
Following its introduction, the engine has been adopted to suit different types of games.
This is one of the major reasons Capcom is making Codename REX. The publisher hopes to make the technology more customizable. All of this will help push for the ultimate goal of photorealism.
