Story Highlights
  • Resident Evil 4 Remake is one of the best games of the year despite being a re-release of a much older game.
  • Capcom confirms it intends to continue making more remakes.
  • The studio is also willing to remake spin-offs like Code Veronica, but nothing is set in stone yet.

Resident Evil has been Capcom’s most successful franchise for two decades. The studio has recently found a new model to keep this IP moving forward, incorporating original entries and remakes.

The developer has released 3 major remakes so far, and all of them have been mostly well-received by fans. The most recent remake, Resident Evil 4, is one of the biggest titles of 2023, reaching over 5 million sales and earning a nomination for Game of the Year.

Following the great reception of these remakes, Capcom has confirmed that more Resident Evil remakes are on the way.

Why it matters: Though the gaming industry appears too reliant on remakes and remasters, Capcom has been able to offer more than just retreads of older games through its remakes.

During the recent PlayStation Partner Awards event in Japan, Resident Evil 4 Remake director Yasuhiro Anpo was asked whether Capcom would keep making more remakes in the franchise. The director stated:

“Yes.”

He asserted that all the recent remakes have been a hit among fans and critics. Since these remakes introduce iconic classics to a new audience, Capcom is happy to continue the trend.

While the director did not allude to any specific remakes for the future, Capcom has previously commented on the possibility of a Code Veronica remake. The studio is willing to revisit even smaller titles for future remakes.

Yasuhiro Anpo explained that remaking a game is easier than releasing a new IP. This makes it an obvious choice for the studio to pursue more remakes since there is little risk involved in the project.

A survey from Capcom has also alluded to more re-releases. We believe this is a smart move from the Japanese gaming giant. Not only are remakes safer projects, but they are also less expensive to create.

Therefore, they often prove to be fruitful for the studio.

Following Resident Evil 4 Remake, excitement for future Capcom remakes is higher than ever. This game has redefined expectations from remakes, making fans excited for what comes next.
