- No Native USB 4.0 Support
Aesthetically, the ROG Strix B650E-F shares a lot of similarities with its predecessor, coming with an all-black design with a few silver accents throughout the board. Of course, it would not be a gaming motherboard without RGB; ASUS has added an RGB logo on top of the rear I/O, further enhancing its overall design. ASUS has provided a strong 14-phase VRM setup with the Strix B650E-F Gaming that is robust enough for mild overclocking on the AMD Ryzen 7 7700X. My testing confirms that the VRM setup is capable of some beneficial overclocking results, and the cooling element keeps the VRM components cool even during load.
It comes with a single Gen 5.0 x 16, along with a standard Gen 4 slot. In addition to that, it features two Gen 5 M.2 slots and a single PCIe 4.0 m.2 slot. To further cater to your storage needs, ASUS has included a total of six SATA ports as well. The ROG Strix B650-F also comes with an HDMI port along with a single Display port.
Although the 14-phase VRM of the Strix B650E-F is not as strong as some of the competing X670E motherboards, it is still competent enough for overclocking the Ryzen 7 7700X. That makes it an excellent value option in the upper mid-range of the AM5 motherboards.

How We Picked & Tested The Best Motherboards For Ryzen 7 7700X
Here are a few things you need to consider before purchasing a motherboard for the Ryzen 7 7700X.
- VRM: VRM, also known as the Voltage Regulator Module, is a crucial part of any electrical component, that is responsible for handling the voltage that flows across components. Going for a cheaper VRM setup not only puts your processor at risk of failing at any given moment but also drastically decreases its overclocking potential.
- Overclocking potential: As mentioned previously, a processor’s overclocking potential depends a lot on the VRM configuration of your motherboard. Since overclocking pushes the CPU voltage above the recommended limit, it is important to have a VRM configuration that can handle the additional power.
- Cooling: Of course, a great host of features and a robust VRM setup will not mean anything if they are not accompanied by an adequate amount of cooling. Especially with these newer processors now running hotter than ever, it is important to ensure that your motherboard comes with a sufficient amount of cooling for the VRMs and your M.2 SSDs.
- Price: Going for a cheaper B650-based motherboard will get you considerably fewer features compared to the higher-end X670E chipset; however, all of that boils down to what your requirements are for a motherboard. If your workload does not require you to opt for the highest-end motherboard, then the B650 chipset should serve you just fine.
