- Suicide Squad was released less than a week ago.
- Reactions to the launch have not been very positive.
- Players are now returning to Batman Arkham Knight, leading to 50% higher player counts.
Following its well-received conclusion to the Batman Arkham trilogy, Rocksteady Studios hoped to break into the live service genre with Suicide Squad. However, poor previews and disappointing reviews have left this game in a difficult spot.
Interestingly, the release has encouraged players to revisit Batman Arkham Knight. According to a report, this game saw a massive resurgence following the release of Suicide Squad: Kill the Justice League.
Why it matters: Batman Arkham Knight is still considered one of the best modern superhero games, making it a challenging comparison for the developer’s latest title.
As reported by TrueTrophies, during the launch week of Suicide Squad on PS5, Batman Arkham Knights saw a new wave of players on both the PS4 and PS5.
The game peaked at a 20% higher player count during the launch week. However, when looking at the data over the last two weeks, Batman Arkham Knight’s player count has increased by around 50%.
This is not the result Rocksteady Studios likely hoped for. Suicide Squad was in the works for many years, but fans have not been happy with the developer’s shift away from single-player games, evidenced by the recent review bombings.
This trend is also not completely brand new. Following the similarly disappointing release of Gotham Knights, players flocked to Batman Arkham Knight on PlayStation, highlighting its staying power all these years later.
Suicide Squad fails to make its live service approach appealing to the masses. The game’s mission design is quite basic, and it fails to live up to the bar of quality set by Rocksteady Studio’s own Batman Arkham trilogy.
For these reasons and more, many still prefer Batman Arkham Knight over this release.
Still, there might be hope for Suicide Squad: Kill the Justice League. Being a live service game, there is always a chance that the looter shooter will make a comeback with future updates and content drops.
While many are dismissing the game for now, the future could turn out to be better for Rocksteady Studio’s first live service project.
