Ubisoft has seen its fair share of controversies for Assassin’s Creed Shadows. Between claims of Yasuke being woke, LGBTQ elements, and historical inaccuracy, the studio is no stranger to criticism.

Its latest move has led to a similar albeit less intense reaction. Ubisoft recently announced a competition for Assassin’s Creed Shadows, hoping to let fans voice NPCs in the game. However, this situation has not played out exactly how the studio expected.

Why it matters: Ubisoft seems unable to escape controversy with Assassin’s Creed Shadows. It was also accused of outsourcing work to the community in the past.

According to Ubisoft, winners of the competition will be allowed to voice an NPC across several different languages.

The gaming giant has asked fans to submit TikTok videos of them recording famous lines from Assassin’s Creed. Winners will then be picked based on their performances, with the best performers getting the chance to be featured in Assassin’s Creed Shadows.

However, this competition has led to scepticism from fans and professional voice actors. Some have been concerned about Ubisoft potentially using this competition to train AI data, while others state that voice acting is a profession and not a competition.

A common point raised against Ubisoft is that these voice actors should be paid. While they are by no means professionals, fans on Twitter urge these participants to sit out unless Ubisoft is willing to pay them for the performance.

One interesting element here is that fans can expect to receive exposure if they can make it through the competition. This could help aspiring voice actors, so Ubisoft’s competition may be beneficial in some cases.

With Assassin’s Creed Shadows arriving on September 15, there isn’t a lot of time left to wrap up this competition. The gaming giant states that submissions will be considered till July 2.

It also emphasizes that NPC dialogue is recorded by professional actors, and this is a fun activity to teach aspiring voice actors about the industry.
