God of War Ragnarok was released on 9th November 2022 for PlayStation 4 and PlayStation 5. The game already had massive hype, being the highly anticipated sequel to the critically acclaimed God of War 2018 and it got numerous perfect or nearly perfect reviews for its visuals and intriguing storyline that helms it a worthy successor to God of War 2018.
Today, Sony has officially revealed that God of War Ragnarok has sold over 5.1 million copies in the first week of its release, making it the fastest-selling first-party PlayStation game and the best-selling game of the God of War franchise.

The success of God of War Ragnarok was expected as it was revealed last week that the sales of God of War Ragnarok were 51% higher than its predecessor in the same amount of time in the UK, and the PlayStation 5 version of the game accounted for 82% of those sales.
These sales figures placed God of War Ragnarok on the top of the UK sales charts leaving recently released big guns like Call of Duty Modern Warfare 2 and FIFA 2023 behind in the region. The fans loved the game’s storyline but were saddened due to the end of the Kratos and Atreus storyline in Norse Mythology, as they expected an excellent trilogy after the soft reboot of the franchise with God of War 2018.
Still, these numbers are impressive considering the short period it was able to achieve these sales figures. It will be interesting to see how Santa Monica Studio will continue the God of War franchise without Kratos and what they have in store for the fans that will be on par with the current reputation of the series, as the latest installment has set the bar even higher for the franchise to continue.
However, the God of War Ragnarok director has shown interest in working on the Castlevania franchise. The next big achievement for the game will be a Game of the Year title at The Game Awards next month. Still, it will be a tough competition between Elden Ring and God of War Ragnarok as Elden Ring has already won the Ultimate Game of The Year Award at Golden Joystick Awards, leaving God of War Ragnarok and Horizon Forbidden West behind.
