When AMD did not compare its newly announced Radeon RX 7000 series to its competitor, the GeForce RTX 4090, we were pretty surprised. But as it turns out, there was a reason for that, as stated by the Chief Architect of Gaming Solutions and Marketing, Frank Azor, in an interview.

According to Frank Azor, they did not compare the Radeon RX 7900 XTX to the GeForce RTX 4090 or RTX 3000 series because they do not see it as a direct competitor, instead what AMD is trying to target is the upcoming GeForce RTX 4080 16GB from Nvidia. This also makes sense when you look at the MSRP of the RX 7900 XTX at $999 compared to $1199 for the GeForce RTX 4080.

Furthermore, it also makes sense now why Nvidia had to cancel RTX 4080 12GB model, aside from the backlash the company faced from the community. If Nvidia had decided to launch the RTX 4080 12GB, then AMD would have given them tough competition, as the 12GB variant was reportedly 30% slower than the 16Gb variant.

With the launch of the Radeon RX 7000 series AMD is now dominating the marketing in the sub $1000 price range, and the Radeon RX 7900 XTX is neck in neck in performance compared to the RTX 4080 16GB. Well, users will have the option to go with a GPU that is not only 20% cheaper but is also equipped with more VRAM, 16GB, compared to 24GB on the RX 7900 XTX.

Competition is always healthy for the market, and it’s good to see AMD trying to be on top where it once used to dominate the GPU market back in the old days. But we won’t know until real performance numbers are on screen.

What do you think about the two new offerings from AMD? Will we get to see an even more powerful GPU from AMD shortly?
