Acquisitions have become a trend in the gaming industry. While gaming rivals have always purchased new studios, recent years have seen an increasing shift towards acquisitions. Xbox has led the charge with their acquisition of Bethesda, and console rivals have followed suit.
Rumors about a possible PlayStation acquisition have been making the rounds for months. Many prominent insiders have talked about PlayStation’s interest in companies like Square Enix and FromSoftware.
While an acquisition of this scale from PlayStation has not come to fruition, the Japanese giant seems to be headed in this direction. Sony has now invested in FromSoftware shares, and will own 14.09% of the company.
Unsurprisingly, Sony is not the only corporation interested in the Japanese developer. After Elden Ring’s success, Bandai Namco saw a huge 34% uplift in revenue. Many investors have been interested in the company after this success. Tencent has also made a huge investment in the company, and will own 16.25% of the company.
FromSoftware titles have gradually gained popularity, and their games have a huge fanbase today. The Dark Souls games have inspired a whole new genre in the industry, called the “souls-like” games.
However, Kadokawa still owns the majority of FromSoftware, at nearly 70%. Rumors pointed to Sony buying the Japanese developer, but it seems like this will not be the case for the forseeable future.
Sony has also worked with FromSoftware on exclusive titles. Bloodborne and Demons Souls were developed exclusively for PlayStation consoles. Perhaps Sony’s new stake in the company could lead to future deals between the two companies.
FromSoftware has become extremely popular as a developer. Their style of challenging gameplay, incredible art direction, and large open worlds has captured audiences all over the globe. Therefore, it comes as no surprise that many gaming giants would want to collaborate with the developer.
Sony has finally made their move, and Tencent has decided to join as well. The developer has stated that they intends to work on new IPs, and this investment will help FromSoftware with future releases. The developer will now able to expand into different gaming markets, while keeping the same level of quality across various titles.
