Since its announcement at the Xbox and Bethesda Showcase, Starfield has been the town’s talk for all the wrong reasons. It was revealed that the game would comprise more than 1000 planets where you can travel, which arose the question of how big is too big for a game? This big scope and many planets could make the game linear and less interesting, especially for a game that took just 6 years of active development.
While we were still questioning the game’s scope choice, Todd Howard, director, and executive producer at Bethesda Studios revealed another aspect of the game. In the Xbox Event Extended showcase yesterday, Howard announced that you wouldn’t be able to travel through space from one planet to another using spaceships. Instead, space and on-surface gameplay have been kept separate from each other.
“People have asked, ‘Can you fly the ship straight down to the planet?’ No. We decided early in the project that the on-surface is one reality, and then when you’re in space it’s another reality. If you try to really spend a lot of time engineering the in-between, like that segue, you’re just spending a lot of time [on something] that’s really just not that important to the player” (Todd Howard via IGN)
This is a bizarre decision and seems an effort-saving move when they could’ve quickly done it to make the game more immersive. When questioned about this, Howard said, ‘That’s really just not that important to the player,’ which seems like a rather defensive excusing statement rather than a well-explained reason.
Starfield’s comparisons were being drawn with No Man’s Sky. But this latest development from Todd Howard has negated the comparisons in this aspect as you can actually fly through space and onto different planets in No Man’s Sky.
Starfield is expected to launch in early 2023 and will be available on Day One on the Xbox Game Pass. We will see how Starfield does practically once the game releases. Stay tuned for any further news, and we’ll keep you updated.
