Nvidia’s Ada Lovelace graphics cards are nearly upon us. The brand new generation of graphics cards is expected to arrive in October 2022. AMD and Nvidia are both likely hard at work as they prepare for the launch of what is shaping up to be the most anticipated PC gaming release.
Meanwhile, rumors and leaks have shown no signs of slowing down. Reputed leakers have covered several aspects of the upcoming launch. Nvidia’s power consumption has been a similar concern across all the leaks. It was recently reported that the GeForce RTX 4060 would consume more power than the GeForce RTX 3070.
This will be the trend moving forward, and the average power consumption for Nvidia GPUs will be much higher than in prior generations. A report from 3dcenter has compared power consumption across various generations of Nvidia graphics cards based on recently leaked details;
According to the data presented, Ada Lovelace might be pretty power-hungry. Nvidia’s upcoming generation would consume 36% more power than the GeForce RTX 30xx graphics cards.
It should be noted that this data was calculated using the lowest power consumption values from the given ranges. The values are also taken from various reports by reputed leakers, as noted by 3Dcenter.
The following percentage increase is observed across the mentioned tiers of GPUs from Ampere to Ada Lovelace.
GeForce xx60 | 34% |
GeForce xx70 | 36% |
GeForce xx80 | 23% |
GeForce xx80Ti/90 | 25% |
Largest Model | 30% |
This data paints a shocking picture of Nvidia’s GeForce RTX 40xx series line-up. While a slight increase isn’t ordinary, the GeForce RTX 40xx cards seem to be taking things to the extreme. In the past, Nvidia has built a reputation for its efficient products like the Pascal generation. However, it seems like those days are long gone.
Furthermore, this data does not use the highest values from the given power consumption ranges. If GPUs like the rumored GeForce RTX 4090 Ti push consumption up to 800 Watts, the Up to 36% increase would be trivial in comparison.
Perhaps most concerning is the percentage increase for the lower-end products. Nvidia’s GeForce xx60 series has historically been their best-selling product, and these GPUs are suited to mid-range builds. If this trend continues, mid-range PC builders will have to spend a more significant part of their money on better power supplies, away from an already limited budget.
While Nvidia’s Ada Lovelace is shaping up to be a sizeable upgrade over the last generation, the power consumption has enthusiasts worried for the future. It seems like Nvidia has decided to sacrifice efficiency in every way to maximize performance, but it remains to be seen if this will work out for the brand.
