Epic Games’ Unreal Engine (UE) is a 3D computer graphics game engine that debuted with the 1998 first-person shooter game Unreal. Initially designed for PC first-person shooters, it is now utilized in three-dimensional (3D) gaming genres.
Since then, it’s come a long way, with Unreal Engine 5 launched on May 13, 2020, supporting all current systems and the next-generation PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X/S consoles. The engine was in the works for nearly two years before it was announced.
We’ve previously seen what the Unreal Engine 5 is capable of, thanks to a sneak peek at The Matrix Awakens demo, which was launched on PC, PlayStation 5, and Xbox Series.
While Fortnite is the first game to be released on Epic Games’ new Unreal Engine 5, many more titles will follow suit and be developed or ported to the new engine. Concerning the series of announcements from developers and publishers, there are more than 30 titles currently being developed on Unreal Engine 5. Given how well it is optimized coupled with breathtaking graphics, it makes sense for developers to gravitate toward it.

Unreal Engine 5 is likely to be used in other titles, such as future Bioshock, Gears of War, The Outer Worlds 2, State of Decay 3, eFootball PES 2022, the upcoming Mass Effect, as well as a new mafia element, according to reports. We previously reported that the upcoming Funcom’s Dune game would also be based on the unreal engine as per job listings; they may also be leaning towards Unreal Engine 5.
We also witnessed what the Unreal Engine is capable of, given the popularity of the Matrix Awakens Demo, and considered the future of gaming in terms of graphics. Following that, other playable demos showcased the true capabilities of unreal engine 5, such as the Tomb Raider UE5 Demo.
Nonetheless, we’re interested in seeing what these developers can achieve with Unreal Engine 5 in their following titles. We hope it will exceed our expectations and establish a new benchmark for visuals and overall performance.
