Mobile gaming has become more and more popular over the years. Partly because mobiles are easily accessible and almost everyone has one (In total, around 7.26 Billion, making up 91.54% of the world’s population). At the same time, mobile games have gotten better with time, and their graphics and mechanics have slowly evolved. Although it is nothing compared to a dedicated console or a gaming PC, they have certainly improved for a small handheld device.
The success of Battle Royale saw many other game developers launching games for the mobile platforms, including Fortnite, Call of Duty Mobile, Apex Legend, and various others. We even have certain games directly ported to the mobile platform, like Life is Strange. Overall, developers are becoming more interested in creating games for mobile, and the latest addition is Sony Interactive Studios.
During an Investor conference call, Sony Group CFO Hiroki Totoki announced that the company plans to release mobile games using PlayStation IPs.
‘The mobile gaming market is included in our growth plans. We consider it a good opportunity to bring PlayStation IPs to more users. While we can’t comment on a specific timeframe, we can definitively say that there are plans to bring PlayStation IPs to mobile … Specific details about the expansion will be announced later.’
In a previous article, we did discuss that Sony’s mobile phone plans include the biggest titles and a complete monetization model. We also have some job listings that prove that Sony is very actively recruiting a team to work on the development of mobile games. Some of the job listings include a Mobile Quality Assurance Project Lead and Strategic Finance Manager, Mobile Games. The biggest highlight here is that the person will be responsible for supporting PlayStation expansion into the mobile platform. And we already know that Sony has already developed a monetization model for their mobile games.
This interprets that Sony is indeed very serious about the mobile gaming business. Consequently, after these announcements and listings, this might not come as a surprise if, in the future, we see Sony launching PlayStation games on mobile platforms (Android and iOS). Considering Sony has more than 25 years’ worth of IPs to choose from, many would-be great picks for the mobile gaming market.
However, it is too early to assume when we can see this happening as there is no information on mobile games being underdevelopment and considering that currently, Sony is hiring the team. But getting PlayStation games on mobile is surely an exciting perspective, and we are excited to see what Sony has in store for us.
