- Mortal Kombat has produced numerous titles over the years but has not experimented much with spin-offs.
- Series creator Ed Boon has once again hinted at a Shaolin Monks sequel.
- He states that the next Shaolin Monks will be about Scorpion & Sub-Zero.
The Mortal Kombat series has produced numerous games over the years. Despite its vast popularity, there’s been a notable absence of spin-offs that fans have eagerly awaited. The last successful spin-off, Shaolin Monks, dates back to 2005.
However, recent news suggests that NetherRealm Studios may be gearing up for a new spin-off within one of its IPs, likely the Mortal Kombat franchise, with speculation pointing towards Shaolin Monks 2.
Ed Boon has also teased a sequel, stating it would revolve around Scorpion and Sub-Zero’s dynamic duo.
Why it matters: Mortal Kombat remains one of the biggest fighting games out today. It also stands as an important IP for Warner Bros, giving the publisher room to experiment with various spin-offs.
Ed Boon’s recent comment supports the speculation surrounding Shaolin Monks 2, but it does not confirm anything as of now. The creator of the series implies that Shaolin Monks 2 is only a matter of time.
Without a doubt, if(when?) we do one, it will be Scorpion and Sub-zero.
-Ed Boon
It’s no secret that Ed Boon is a huge fan of this spin-off and still intends to create a sequel someday.
If recent reports turn out to be true, another spin-off would be welcome for fans who have been eagerly anticipating a different flavor of Mortal Kombat for quite some time. Such an entry could also pave the way for further spin-offs that experiment with the IP in different ways.
Spin-offs were more common in the early years of the Mortal Kombat franchise. One notable example is Mortal Kombat Mythologies: Sub-Zero, which centered around Sub-Zero’s incarnation and was the first spin-off released.
So, while Shaolin Monks 2 wouldn’t be the first spin-off based on Sub-Zero, it would be a welcome change of pace for the franchise.
The prospect of a Scorpion and Sub-Zero spin-off is particularly exciting since the two have evolved quite a bit in the last decade. Their relationship is more rival-like today, though the latest timeline from Mortal Kombat 1 makes them adversaries again.
Mortal Kombat 1 sold 3 million units, but it’s no secret that the game has been losing popularity rather quickly. Therefore, we eagerly await NetherRealm’s next move, with Shaolin Monks 2 carrying the potential to rejuvenate the IP.
