- Xbox ported Sea of Thieves to PlayStation very recently.
- The game became an immediate hit, dominating the downloads on PlayStation’s digital store.
- However, a new report indicates that it is quickly losing players, with only 40% of the initial player base staying behind for more adventures.
Xbox started a new wave of porting games to PlayStation. This venture began with Grounded and Pentiment, eventually bringing Sea of Thieves to the PS5. Following the latter’s success, fans can also expect more third-party releases.
However, while Sea of Thieves hit the ground running on PS5, it seems the game is already at risk of being forgotten by users on the platform.
Why it matters: This trend of declining player counts has been observed with many huge titles in recent months. However, the decline has come much faster in this case.
Sea of Thieves landed in a sweet spot on PlayStation after the 2018 launch for Xbox, joining the most-downloaded titles on the PlayStation Store.
According to True Trophies, however, the title has lost around 58% of players that jumped on the hype train. This is concerning mainly due to Sea of Thieves’ status as a live service title.
This report uses data from over 3.1 million PlayStation accounts, stating that player counts peaked in early May. Since then, the numbers have only gone down, spelling bad news for Rare.
If the game has already lost this many players, one can imagine how difficult it will be to prevent further losses. Fortunately, the game supports cross-play, so fans should not be concerned about potential matchmaking issues from the limited player base.
Despite the implications, Sea of Thieves can be considered a major success for Xbox, as the game has reached over 40 million players. PlayStation has likely added quite a bit to this player count since April, leading to a win-win situation for Microsoft.
Rare will continue to support the title with new content for the foreseeable future. Therefore, those who choose to stick around on PS5 will likely keep playing and exploring the expansive waters of Sea of Thieves for many more years.
