Valorant has long been rumored for consoles. Prior job listings have provided evidence for this version of the popular first-person shooter, and console players have been waiting to finally get their hands on the competitive experience that this hero shooter offers.
At Summer Game Fest, Riot has officially confirmed the console launch.
Why it matters: Since CS:GO does not exist on consoles, Valorant does not have a direct competitor on the platform. This gives it a unique opportunity to dominate the space.
Valorant is headed to consoles later this year. Riot says that this version offers the compete feature-rich experience that PC players have enjoyed over the years, bringing the shooter to a brand new audience.
While no exact release date has been shared, a free limited beta has been announced for the PS5 and Xbox Series S|X. It also seems this shooter will be skipping last-generation consoles.
The beta kicks off on June 14, so fans of tactical hero-based shooter gameplay should stay tuned for next week.
This is part of Riot’s initiatives to expand the IP further. According to recent reports, a movie based on the franchise is also in development.
Console gaming is currently bigger than ever. For instance, the PS5 is home to 50 million players. Therefore, Riot is likely to find a huge audience on both PlayStation and Xbox.
Since Riot suffered from layoffs earlier this year, the console release will be a much-needed boost for everyone’s spirit at the studio. Valorant is likely to receive a lot of love on both PlayStation and Xbox, continuing its success on more than just the PC platform.
