Story Highlights
  • Destiny 2 has recorded a massive surge in player base with the Final Shape DLC.
  • The title has almost managed to level its all-time peak of about 316K players.
  • However, the DLC has been bombed with many negative reviews on Steam.

Once highly popular, Destiny 2 hasn’t seen a lot of love lately. This has largely been due to the troubles the studio behind the game has been facing in recent months. However, with The Final Shape DLC, Destiny 2 is seeing a massive surge in players.

Why it matters: The sci-fi first-person shooter saw major drops in the player count last year. It used to average around 100K players but then fell to even less than 40K. But this year seems to promise a resurgence for the live service title.

Destiny 2 has almost managed to match its all-time peak due to The Final Shape DLC.

Originally slated for a February 2024 release, the Final Shape DLC was pushed to June 4. However, Bungie promised a much bigger and bolder version. They also announced free updates for the game that began back in April.

Following the DLC, it seems that fans have once again invested themselves in this sci-fi first person-shooter. There has been a massive surge in concurrent players, and the game reached a 24-hour peak of over 314K players.

For reference, this is just 2K players shy of the all-time peak concurrent player count on Steam.

Destiny 2
Destiny 2 is still one of the biggest live-service games.

However, Bungie might not have expected this many players to storm the servers, leading to long queue times and various connection-related problems.

The recent reviews for The Final Shape are also quite negative on Steam, though the community seems to be happy with the content itself. The negativity mostly stems from the server issues at launch.

The studio has recently struggled with layoffs and supposed criticism from PlayStation.

However, The Final Shape seems to be a much-needed morale boost. With Destiny 2 returning to such high player counts, the team is likely to work with even more passion moving forward. Rumors also state that Destiny 3 is in the works.
