- Arrowhead Game Studios recently revealed Sony has been extremely helpful in the development of Helldivers 2.
- The original release date of the game was set in 2019, but Sony extended development till 2024.
- The gaming giant also raised the budget to ensure no compromises were made.
Helldivers 2 is undoubtedly one of the biggest games of 2024. In fact, it is the biggest PlayStation game ever on PC. While the concurrent players are declining rapidly due to Sony’s blunder of delisting it in most countries, the game has been more than successful.
It also managed to sell over 12 million copies in just three months. According to Arrowhead Game Studios, much of this success can be attributed to Sony’s support during development.
Why it matters: Sony is known for treating its studios well, and the developer of Sea of Thieves also praised it for helping port the game.
The Helldivers 2 presentation at Nordic Game revealed that the game was originally targeting a 2019 launch, meaning it was delayed for 4 years. It also revealed that the team had a really hard time working on the project as it was always trying to meet the deadlines.
Therefore, Sony allocated a bigger budget and provided more support so that the studio could continue working on the title. While this was a risky move, given the original Helldivers’ reception, it surely paid off.
The developers have indeed worked hard on the game for eight years, but Sony has done an excellent job as a leader in supporting them through this journey. This type of leniency and leadership helps foster an environment full of creativity.
The developer has nothing but kind words for Sony after this success. Unfortunately, Sony’s own policy has been detrimental to Helldivers 2 recently, making it unavailable for millions worldwide.
As of now, the game is still delisted from Steam in most countries, and there is no information about when it will likely be listed back. Despite this recent controversy, kudos to Sony for being so helpful.
